A few weeks ago, we drove North to go to Bulgaria. As we had a lot of things going on, we forgot to keep you posted on our website. Thus, it is time for a new post!

As we were leaving the Peloponessos, we noticed that it was getting colder and rainier. We enjoyed a hot bath in Thermopylae, but kept driving North to get to our winter apartment. Because Covid cases have been increasing throughout Europe, we read that crossing the border to Bulgaria might be difficult. We therefore decided to go back to North Macedonia and cross the border to Bulgaria from there. Getting to North Macedonia was easy, but at the Bulgarian border we were sent back. We needed a negative PCR test! Finally, at 8 p.m., we recieved our test results and arrived in Bulgaria.

Because we still had some days left before we could move into our apartment, we went to Sofia. We booked an AirBnb and biked to the city center. Although we only saw Sofia by night, we really loved it! All the Christmas lights and decorations gave it a very nice vibe. And of course, the Alexander Nevski cathedral was magnificent!

Before we were going to be stuck in the mountains, we wanted to make the best out of our last day in the van. We drove to Melnik, where we had also been two years ago. We did the same wine tour and tasting as back then, but we were able to try different wines. And of course, we brought some bottles with us! At the end of the day, we went for a walk to the Melnik pyramids; it was great to be back and they were even more beautiful with the sunset!

Now, we are in our cozy and warm apartment in Bansko. We had our first week on our new ‘job’ and although it was pretty chaotic, we like it a lot. We will stay here for the next two months to help out at a Worldschooling program: families from all over the world gather here to meet each other and to have a lot of fun. Our job is to go skiing with little groups of kids and to organise several other activities (science, arts and crafts, games, sledding, etc.) during the week. So far, we’ve had a lot of fun with the kids and with their parents and we are looking forward to the ski slopes to open!
